Thai medical tourism industry booms

In 2018, the total output value of Thai medical tourism is expected to increase by 13.9% year-on-year to reach 26.436 billion baht. The per capita consumption expenditure is between 23.5-700,000 baht.

Ms. Tani, director of the Tourism Product Development Department of the Tourism and Tourism Authority of Thailand, revealed that after analyzing the statistical data of 220 medical and health institutions nationwide, it was found that the Thai medical tourism industry still maintained rapid and stable development. The number of international tourists to Thailand for medical tourism in 2017 was 66,492, and this number will increase this year. The total expenditure of international tourists to Thailand for medical tourism last year was approximately 23.128 billion baht, and this year it is expected to increase by 13.9% to 26.436 billion baht.

Calculated based on per capita expenditure, the per capita consumption during medical treatment in Thailand was approximately 23.5-700,000 baht. The average stay time is about 5 days. Segmented by medical needs, consumer spending on treatment courses like alcohol and drug addicts is around 230-440 thousand baht. The cost of seeking infertility services is about 200,000-400,000 baht. Expenses for other health packages like resort health centers are around 3.7-160,000 baht.

After an in-depth analysis of behavior habits, it was found that international tourists from Myanmar, Laos, the Middle East, Australia, the United States, China and Russia were very satisfied with the level of Thai medical tourism services. In terms of obtaining Thai medical information, most of them are through relatives and friends around them, followed by medical tourism agencies. When deciding which service agency to choose, first of all, the qualifications of the agency, and secondly, the reputation and the cure rate. For international tourists in medical tourism, 80% choose to stay in a hotel with a 3-star rating or more, and the time is about 3-5 days. It is also worth noting that medical tourism generally does not come alone, and usually goes together.

As of now, a total of 64 hospitals and clinics in Thailand have obtained JCI certification. In addition to being the most among ASEAN countries, it is also the fourth largest country in the world. This is one of the important reasons why Thailand attracts international medical tourism tourists. In addition, relatively cheap medical expenses and high-quality supporting services are also key reasons.
